Re: Hello Copywriters

Let's address a few things to help speed up your process. The reason I asked is because I've only recently started out on becoming a writer (of some sort), and there's really only so much information on the internet I can go by when trying to understand what it takes to be a copywriter, writer, etc....

Re: Hello Copywriters

Hello Clem, I just started a 6-month project and meant to come back and respond. My apologies for the delay. To answer your question, I'm a business owner first and foremost. My goal is to generate money for my company quickly. Unfortunately, the process is labor-intensive with book writing gigs, an...

Re: Suitable cold email?

Hello TCC,

Don't sweat it. Test the marketplace. Put your message out there.

The only way you're going to know for sure how effective your copy is, you've got to send it.

Then measure your open, clickthrough, and responses.

You need no one's permission.

Just Do It!

Hello Londonprince, Most of what you wrote, I like. It's very conversational. Steve has covered a lot of ground. What I'm going to provide is my opinion about the entrance point. I'm torn between the two headlines though. But if I had to choose, I'd probably go with #2 with this modification: Kiss Y...

Re: What is the most important part to copywriting?

Hello Franklin, If you're bored with research, step away. We all get overwhelmed, especially if it's an industry we know little about. I for one break up my research into digestible sections because that works for me. Based on your past life experience, what's the quickest way you found you could le...

Re: What is the most important part to copywriting?

The thing about that bonus tip, it's what our parents taught us as kids. "You Won't Know For Sure Until You Try It!" As consumers, we are always testing new products on our own because we're curious and our current circumstances. Perfect example: Today I shopped at Wal-Mart and they were o...

Re: What is the most important part to copywriting?

Hello Copyking, Steve has given you a perfect 3-Step outline above. Based on his recommendations let's assume you are asked to write a sales letter about Heinz Ketchup. Step 1. Do your Market research - Find out everything you can on who buys, uses, and refuses to use the product. Step 2. Do your Pr...

Re: What is the most important part to copywriting?

Hello Copyking, Your frustration is highly warranted. Today's advice on multiple forums, job boards, and gurus is extremely conflicting. But the #1, most important part of copywriting is RESEARCH!!! It is your backstory, foundation, protagonist, antagonist, solution, and distilled details that give ...

Re: Why is this direct mail piece a total failure?

If we knew what their research showed, we'd understand their methodology. All of a sudden, HughesNet arrives in the mail. If you're in one of those zip codes, frustrated with Comcast or Directv, this might be a better alternative and a breath of fresh air. So, EchoStar takes advantage of this, but ...

Re: Why is this direct mail piece a total failure?

Ah yes, that's the part that confuses me. When their main selling point is about "faster speed" (they mention it in the headline, sub-head, and first bullet point), why would they waste money targeting zip codes that already have higher internet speeds than what they're promoting? If we k...

Re: Why is this direct mail piece a total failure?

You would think EchoStar, who spends $100,000,000+ a year in marketing, would personalize this. However, their cold mail approach uses the Every Door Direct Mail model and mails to communities based on zip codes and median income. For instance, here in Tallahassee, they would not target our southsid...

Re: Why is this direct mail piece a total failure?

Hello SARubin, I've seen these before. These are blanket template controls EchoStar (parent company) uses for HughesNet. Down at the bottom right corner is the tracking number. These controls are used for regional marketing. The only areas on this sheet that get updated are: Headline: Your days of s...

Hello Mario, I write for many agencies and the editors and copy chiefs I work with are brutal with my copy. These individuals are brutal with any copywriter that brings them sales copy drafts. Looking at your draft, here's what they would point out. Note the red and blue words. Here's an updated ver...

The areas in red are the only parts of the storyline that is false; the rest is a true story. Finally, Steven was going to reconnect with the dad he never knew. To do that, he pulled up stakes and moved his family of seven 3000 miles across the country. But halfway through the trip, it nearly ended ...

Re: Story in Copywriting - How To Flesh Out Your Story

The basic 6 point structure is... Once upon a time... Every day was the same... Then one day... Because of that... And because of that... Until finally... Finally, Steven was going to reconnect with the dad he never knew. To do that, he pulled up stakes and moved his family of seven 3000 miles acro...
