The Most Important Email You Can Send to Your List...

Post by SARubin »

Your welcome email contains some of the most important email copy you'll ever write, because it's your main opportunity to make a great first impression with your reader.

If you have a great welcome message, it not only builds rapport with your reader but it helps set the expectations for future emails.

On the other hand... With a poor welcome message, they may never open your emails again (except to click the unsubscribe link to be removed from your list).

What makes for a powerful welcome email?

Before we go over what makes a great welcome message, let's touch on 2 common mistakes many email marketers make in their welcome messages...

First of all, never make an entire email that says little more than "Thanks for joining my email list".

It comes across as desperate, but more importantly it wastes valuable real estate and it wastes your reader's time.

Of course you can start by thanking them, but then we need to immediately impress our reader with the value they signed up for. Because if they're impressed by the quality of your welcome email, they'll continue to open your emails in the future.

Second, unless they signed up to specifically receive offers, do not sell in your first email.

Selling in your first email immediately gives the impression that you only want to extract money from your subscribers, and can easily turn off your subscriber right then and there.

In summary - do not send patronizing first emails, and (unless they signed up to receive offers) do not make a sales pitch as your welcome message.

What Makes a Great Welcome Message

First of all, your welcome message needs to provide value right out of the gate.

The value can be the content in the email itself, or it can be a link to a downloadable report or product.
But whatever you choose to send, remember this is your only chance to make a great first impression. So don't hold back. Send your best stuff right up front or you might not get a second chance.

In addition to having great content or a free download, it's also important to let members know what they can expect in the future. Such as what kind of content and how often you'll email them.

Most people like to have a certain amount of predictability in their lives. So giving it to them allows them to feel more comfortable with you as part of their life.

Finally, set them up for the next email.

Finish your welcome message with a benefit driven expectation by telling them what your next message will be about.

When you get a reader excited about your first email, and you get them to eagerly await your next email, you'll begin to set the stage of expectations. And you'll likely have a reader for life (as long as you continue to provide great content and don't oversell).

The basic formula for a great welcome email is this...

Don't waste your readers time with patronizing desperation, or hard-sell tactics.

Do pack that first email with rapport building value, and set expectations for the future of your relationship.
