Two things every copywriter MUST remember about copywriting

1 - Copywriting is about selling

There are lots of people out there who write sales copy but who are doing it badly, because they start with the wrong premise.

Yes, they write with proper grammar, syntax, and sentence structure, and those things are important, but there's a huge difference between proper academic writing and effective copywriting.

Why? Because academic writing is about the transfer of information. And copywriting is about selling our ideas to others.

The recent explosion of AI copy generators makes it easy for complete newbies to write what appears to be acceptable copy, but they too fall short when it comes to engaging the reader or selling the product.

Yes, as copywriters we need to be able to write well, but we must first learn to understand people. How their minds work and what makes them tick.

Which brings us to the next point...

2 - We must focus on the reader

A lot of copywriting under performs because the copy is all about the product, and not the reader.

Business owners understand the company. Managers understand the product and distribution.
They know the business from the inside-out. But the customer is looking at it from the outside-in.

Instead of telling the market how great our product is, we are better served by listening, observing, and finding out what they want.

What are their needs and wants?
What will motivate them to pay attention to our message, and act upon it?

Only then can we tie our offer into the already existing desires of the market.

These two concepts are not new . They've been the foundation for all effective sales copy for the last 100 years, probably longer, and they'll continue to be the foundation for all effective copywriting long after I'm dead and gone.

Anyway, that was my thought for the day.

Feel free to share your own thoughts...

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
Thank you very much for your informative instructions! Do you also have the customer questionnaire in German? I know you are doing a lot of work and my question is very immodest. But unfortunately my English is rudimentary. You also have one wish unfulfilled with me...

Hallo Textexpertin

Copywriting Client Questionnaire

Alles Gute,
Steve

ENGLISH TRANSLATION...

Hello textexpertin

Unfortunately I do not read, write, or speak German. But thanks to Google translate I believe we can still enjoy many good conversations with each other.

I just ran the client questionaire you asked for through a PDF translater and it looks like it worked.

I don't know how accurate the translation is (because I do not speak German) but hopefully it is close enough to be useful for you.

I added the German version to the same post as the English version, in the download section of the forums, so you can download it from there at your convenience.

Copywriting Client Questionnaire

All the best,
Steve

Renate

I’m new to the forum, but I appreciate the consistent messages/reminders that it’s all about knowing your prospective customer – as intimately as possible. When I first started, I was focused on being the most clever/”outside-the-box.” And don’t get me wrong – that can be a good thing when utilized in harmony with what’s most important.

One thing I keep in my head when I’m writing: “The success of this copy will run in direct proportion to how well I understand the reasons customers desire this product/service.”

Hey WilWrite4Food,
Welcome back :)

I'm glad you appreciate the message.

To be honest, I wrote that post right after I threw a half days work in the trash bin.

I was writing some copy for a product and when I was done I set it aside (like I always do). When I came back later, to review it and edit, I instantly realized it was garbage.

The copy felt like a bland, ego filled, brochure about the product and the company - "our product is great, our company is great, etc."
Of course those things are fine as a secondary message to show a little confidence in the product, but I forgot to put the reader first and foremost.

And that's why I started this topic. Partly as a reminder to myself, and mostly with the hopes it could help others avoid making the same rookie mistake.

Onward and upward, right?

All the best,
Steve
