Direct Response vs Brand Awareness

I've wondered this for a long time and I am finally going to get it off my chest! :D

When you're starting in DR copywriting, you'll often hear about searching out the letters/ads that persist over time to know what's successful.

But what about brand awareness campaigns?

If those aren't successful or trackable back to hard results, why does it seem like brands keep pumping big money into ads and commercials? There must be some return that they're seeing to make them keep allocating big budgets towards this?

Just curious.
