Well, the state of California has done it again. In an effort to control peoples lives the legislators are putting a new law in place starting next year (Jan. 2020), that limits the number of freelance writing gigs you can do for any one company.
The lawmakers claim that they’re protecting workers rights by forcing companies to treat long term freelancers as employees, so the companies need to provide expensive employee benefits.
Unfortunately, once again, the lawmakers never stopped to ask the freelancers if they wanted such a law.
In the Gig economy, that many freelance writers enjoy, writers have the opportunity to earn a substantial side income while having the freedom to set our own schedules. But forcing companies to pay “employee” benefits will more than likely cause companies to limit the number of assignments they give to freelancers.
Here’s a link to the article where I first learned about the new law…
“Everybody Is Freaking Out”: Freelance Writers Scramble to Make Sense of New California Law
A new bill that caps freelance submissions may make writing financially unsustainable for many workers even though the legislator behind the law insists that the goal is “to create new good jobs and a livable, sustainable wage job.”

What do you think? Should lawmakers be allowed to limit a freelancers income, even if freelancers don’t want the law?
